hi ,
Today the hot issue is MySql , if it goes under oracle's hands or not.
If you don't know in April 2009 Oracle has agreed to merge with Sun. Sun has the right to MySql AB which is the main MySql developer , it also has Java and Open Office technologies.
Oracle has said that it would keep MySql under its current licensing , and continue to develop and maintain it. I think that they haven'tgot an interest in doing so , they have their product already .So why develop an open source competitor that can take market share from them in the future ?
It look as if Oracle , taking advantage of sun's weak position , had found a clever way to take out a competitor , this would not only limit competition in the market but would eventually have an impact on the CMS that I am using now (Joomla) and others (drupal , wordpress ) . Imagine that a single Mysql license would cost 500$ , hence , Joomla would be free of charge , but you can not use Mysql with it . The entire low cost web ecology system could be wiped out.. gone are the days when you had low purchase costs.
What would happen in the cloud computing world , where vendors are trying to save money on database using MySql low cost . This would hurt these vendors too.
There are very important questions to consider before approving this deal. This deal should not be approved in a rush , MySql should be sold to someone else.
There still time to act , sign the petition to be submitted to the E.U anti trust commission ,
http://helpmysql.org/en/petition and maybe they can stop this process from going further ..
let your voice be heard , save MySql .
Thank you to all of you that have signed , and those who will sign in the future.
With great hope for an open source future ,
Etai Tavor
